System Tray Icon vanished

Hey guys,

Strange issue just occurred: I've successfully deployed the Managed Antivirus to a client (yay!), and everything seems to be reporting to the dashboard just fine, but now the system tray icon has vanished. It seems to stay gone even after rebooting.

However, the AV seems to be working just fine.

Maybe the system icon got lonely without the desktop icon?

It just keeps getting stranger and stranger:

I have another machine that's exhibiting the same behavior (the system tray icon is gone), but on this one I have not deleted the desktop icon (I was curious if perhaps that was causing the system tray icon to vanish... I guess it wasn't).

Both of these machines are using the latest version of Kabuto downloaded today.

I just checked both of my test machines, and neither of them have a system tray icon anymore. Hmmm...

Okay, I have some good news and some bad news:

Good news first - we've found the issue and we're working in solving it.

Good news part 2 - Kabuto is still running but the icon is disappearing. It is unrelated to the desktop icon (as you found)

Bad news - we'll need a day or two to fix it

I noticed the same thing (disappearing icon) but thought it was just me. I didn't have enough time to investigate (family coming into town). I'll check back in a couple of days to see if the issue has been resolved.

Just out of curiosity, will the missing icon impact client-facing notifications?

Hi guys,
I'm looking into the icon problem right now. @EricM Kabuto should still be running in the background so I don't think it will impact any client facing notifications.

Funnily enough my addition for allowing Kabuto to run on multiple system accounts is also what caused this System Tray icon problem. The middle ground fix for now while I work a better solution is that the Kabuto Startup task has been added to the "Users" group. kabuto should run on startup or logon for any admin and depending on the UAC settings run on regular accounts with an admin prompt. We updated to 1.1.9 this morning for this fix.

I can also confirm that the desktop icon has disappeared after the latest update. Only the system tray icon has remained. I have re-installed multiple times and nothing.

Hi @cypress,
did you delete the desktop shortcut at some point? or you installed kabuto and it was never there to being with?

nope never deleted the desktop shortcut at all. When I installed Kabuto it appeared briefly and then went away. The system tray icon is the only thing remaining.

That's certainly weird. Fix one problem break another lol

Ok so I got my field laptop out and installed Kabuto for the very first time on it. I had never installed it on there before. I used the tech installer and enabled Managed Antivirus through the dashboard. Right after that the 2 mins later it synced and 5 mins later Emsisoft was installed with no issues.

It is shown as Installed in the dashboard and synced sucessfully. Also the Desktop icon has not disappeared.

So at least right now for my field laptop it is working perfectly.

I have 8 computers where the icon on the desktop and systemtray is gone
and they also appear on my unsynced device list

so i dont think kabuto i running in the background

@cypress Today's release should hopefully fix your disappearing shortcut issue. I never found definitive problems in the code but i rearranged and refactored some stuff and I think it should be better now. if it's not my changes should make it much easier to find, the shortcut code was kind of stuck in the middle of a lot of other stuff haha.

That is great @rt_garrettI I will be sure to check that out. I know the issue was basically happening when Managed Anti-virus was activated and would go away once a scan started. Once the scan was done then it would come back. Hopefully this has addressed that.

Hi there.
I'm re-checking kabuto, in order to adopt it for my customers base.
I'm using free tier, deploying in various VMs; windows 7, windows 10 10586 and even windows 10 14328, but in all deploy I found a problem of double tray icon.

I think that, in order to circumvent the issue in this thread, a double autorun entry has been enabled:
One in HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and another one via Task Scheduler.

This could be a minor issue, or maybe just happening to me (double tay icon, I mean), but it could be interesting to discuss or further investigate.

Hi Anton,
I actually found this duplication last night while working on an different thing. It will be gone in the next release. Both system tray icons might not be real though, sometimes when kabuto is refreshing itself the system tray doesn't refresh and there's one real one and one that will disappear when you mouse over it. Is there two kabuto.exs's in the process manager when you see two tray icons? Or does one disappear when you mouse over it?
